Nigel Gifford North Pole Expedition – Survival Tips
You cannot plan for the unpredictable but you can learn some basic things to do in an emergency, and like many aspects of adventure they are habits that should become instinctive. They are attitudes that could save your life.
The first habit of survival in a new or unfamiliar environment is to be prepared. It may sound like old-fashioned Scout advice, but it applies wherever you go. Another way of putting this is: don’t leave out something in the planning stage which could cause or turn into an emergency when you are out in the ‘field’, whether it is up a mountain, out at sea or deep in a jungle. The second habit for coping with hazards is: don’t do anything to make things worse.
There are risks in ordinary daily life but travelling abroad brings additional risks and along with them the fear of going into unknown situations. Some preparation and knowledge will reduce this fear and boost your confidence. As with so many things to do with safety, preparation is better than cure and knowing what hazards are out there is the first step to avoiding them and not letting them spoil your journey.
